The Ora Van Buskirk Scholarship

The Ora Van Buskirk scholarship was established from the bequest of ten thousand dollars left by Ora Van Burskirk, charter member and former president. Ora Van Buskirk was a dedicated and much loved teacher of science in Rocky Mount for many years.

The bequest was restricted in that it may only be invested with the interest therefore used to provide an annual scholarship to a member of the chapter who is working toward an advanced degree to improve her work as a teacher or educational administrator. In the event that a member uses the scholarship in any given year, the interest shall be added to the amount of the award of the coming year. If no such scholarship is awarded for three (3) consecutive years, the accumulated interest for those three (3) years shall be added to the principal of the investment. This award is to be known as the Ora Van Buskirk Award in memory of Ora Pace Van Buskirk.
These monies shall be invested for each year in certificate of deposit or fund which will receive the highest interest rate at that time. The president and the finance chairman will investigate the possibilities and make that decision.

The following qualifications were established by the Executive Board:  The member must:
a.    Be an active member of Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for one year.
b.    Be working toward an advanced (graduate-level) degree to improve her work as a teacher or educational administrator.
c.    Attach two (2) letters of recommendation to the application. One letter should be a professional reference and the other a character recommendation.
d.    Submit a typed paper of 300 words or less stating her educational goals.
e.    Submit the completed application to the Scholarship and World Fellowship committee. This committee shall designate the recipient.
